Disputanta firefighter laid to rest

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT)- A final farewell to a volunteer firefighter, who dedicated twenty years to his department. 35-year-old, Joshua Culler, fought fires -- and cancer. After a short battle with leukemia, Culler passed away. Wednesday afternoon, he was laid to rest with great fanfare.

Fire trucks lined the street at J.T. Morris & Son Funeral Home in Petersburg, where the service was held.

"He mentored and help train a lot of our members throughout his 20 years. He was one of a kind. There aren't too many out there like him," said John Tyrcha, Fire Chief with Disputanta Fire & Rescue.

Hundreds turned out to say goodbye.

"This pain is something we go through. We can't walk away from it," said Rev. Bob Blinn.

Culler battled hundreds of fires. For the last two years of his life he battled cancer.

"We all wish we could have done more. We wish more could have been done," Blinn added.

Hopewell High School Future Business Leaders Shine

Hopewell High School Future Business Leaders Shine

The Hopewell High School Future Business Leaders of America team has a lot to be proud of this year.  The group had a very strong showing in both the regional and state competitions with two students qualifying for the national conference.  Olajuwon Parham and Aynna Ogaldez placed second at the state conference in the Marketing category.  The victory secured them slots at this year’s event in San Antonio Texas.

“I was very excited.  I have never been to a national conference before,” said Aynna Ogaldez, a junior whose team excelled in a marketing roll playing scenario.  “I love the role plays.  It gives me great practice at public speaking.”

The team was only given 20 minutes to study an event fact sheet and communicate their strategy to the judges in a seven-minute presentation.

UPDATE: Woman dies in Prince George trailer fire

PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT)- PRINCE GEORCE COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - Crews are investigating a second deadly fire that killed a woman inside her mobile home Sunday. It happened in Prince George County on Pole Run Road. It's about two miles off Route 10 near Burrowsville.

Fire crews cut through the metal and debris, where 48-year-old Sherry Williams lived.

"It's crazy," said Williams' sister, Mary Taylor. "It's just unbelievable to look at that."

Williams rented the single-wide trailer, which had many additions including a utility room and several porches. The fire burnt most of the home leaving mostly steel frames.

"When it's this far destroyed, mobile homes aren't made with that much to start with, it's difficult", said Prince George Fire & EMS Deputy Director, Brad Owens.

Petersburg names weight room for Langford

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT)- Kendall Langford is one of the most famous alumni of Petersburg High School and was arguably the best football player ever for the Crimson Wave.  Thursday night saw the hometown hero return to his old stomping grounds to be recognized for his generosity and accomplishments.

Langford, who now plays for the St. Louis Rams, donated an unspecified amount of money to get new equipment for the Petersburg High School weight room.  Thursday, the Crimson Wave returned the favor, naming the weight room for their former star.  The venue is now known as the Langford House of Power, and was unveiled to family and friends during a ceremony.

The hour-long celebration was a tribute to Langford, as former teachers, friends and family spoke on his behalf, and he could not fight back tears while watching a video made for him during the ceremony.
