93% of Virginia schools accredited | News

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- State education officials say 93 percent of Virginia's public schools are fully accredited after meeting state benchmarks.

The number of schools accredited this year is actually slightly down from last year. Education officials tell us they expected this decline, due in part to more rigorous math tests.

They expect a similar impact next year, when tougher English and science tests are introduced.

In Chesterfield and Hanover, every single school was fully accredited. In Henrico County, all but two schools were fully accredited.

In Richmond, 70 percent of schools hit the benchmark. 14 were accredited with warning. That's actually worse than city schools did last year - when only five were accredited with warning.

In Petersburg, four of the seven schools were not fully accredited. The same four schools failed to reach accreditation levels last year, as well.

Only two schools in the state were denied accreditation. Peabody Middle School in Petersburg was one of them. It is the seventh straight year Peabody was denied accreditation.
